  • Do you have wrinkles between your brows, on your forehead, or crow’s feet that get worse when your smile or frown?
  • Do you tend to lift your eyebrows and make the lines on your forehead worse?
  • Are you interested in reversing the signs of aging and looking more relaxed?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you may want to consider BOTOX®. BOTOX® is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the US.

Dr. John McCann is an experienced facial plastic surgeon at Discover Facial Appearances in Leawood, Kansas. Dr. McCann has been an innovator in the use of BOTOX® procedures.

What Is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is a purified protein isolated from a microorganism. Many important drugs we use today like antibiotics were first isolated from microorganisms.

The cosmetic form of BOTOX® is a popular drug that’s injected to reduce lines and wrinkles.  BOTOX® reduces facial lines and wrinkles, as well as crow’s feet lines near the eyes.

How Does BOTOX® Work?

Some facial wrinkles develop from constant contraction of facial muscles. BOTOX® relaxes those muscles by blocking the nerve impulses that make them contract.

Tiny doses get injected under the skin to reduce wrinkles and expression lines. Areas that can be treated with BOTOX® include the forehead, frown lines, crow’s feet, lips, chin, and neck bands.

The combination of topical anesthetic and a tiny needle makes BOTOX® painless. When you get BOTOX®, you won’t need to recover afterwards. It takes BOTOX® 3 days to relax the wrinkles and the effects last 3-6 months.

BOTOX® for Migraine Headaches

Many insurance companies now pay for BOTOX injections for chronic migraine headaches, which means you suffer from migraines approximately half of the time. Other qualifications include:

  • You have seen a neurologist
  • You have had a MRI Scan
  • Tried other migraine treatments

We encourage you to schedule a consultation with our team to determine if you would benefit from BOTOX for migraines. Our insurance specialists will work with your insurance company to find out whether you meet the criteria for this procedure to be covered.

Does Discover Facial Appearances “Dilute” BOTOX®?

Does Discover Facial Appearances “Dilute” BOTOX®?

When shipped to Discover Facial Appearances, BOTOX® is a powder. The powder must first be mixed with sterile saline to inject it. At Discover Facial Appearances, we follow the manufacturers recommendation. This is 1-4 ml of saline per vial of BOTOX®. Although the amount of sterile saline is important, the key is the number of units injected. The doctor will discuss how many units they need to treat you. It is not a good idea to try to spread a low number of units across many areas of the face. When this occurs, the injections are not as effective or long lasting. If you have a more limited budget, we recommend that you choose to treat only the area that bothers you the most.

One of the great advantages of BOTOX® injections is that there is little or no recovery. After getting the injections, you’ll have some small bumps at the injection site. These bumps usually disappear in an hour. Rarely a patient will get a small bruise, which can take about two weeks to resolve. If this occurs and is bothersome, one of our aestheticians can show you how to cover it with makeup.

For cosmetic purposes, this varies between about 25 and 100 units. It depends on the number of areas treated and the size of your facial muscles. All medications can cause an allergic reaction. Severe allergy to BOTOX® is so rare that Dr. McCann has never seen one despite many years of experience. Other complications or side effects include:
  • Rare transient systemic side effects such as dry mouth and flu-like symptoms.
  • Bruising occurs in less than 15% of patients and is typically mild and resolves itself.
  • Drooping in the corner of the mouth or speech problems can occur if you have injections in the mouth area.
  • Drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid can occur when you get injections around the eyes.
Reduce your risk of complications by having an experienced physician perform your injections. When these side effects occur, they resolve when the BOTOX® wears off.
