Mid-Face Lifts, Face Lifts, and Neck Lifts at Discover Facial Appearances

Are you distressed by signs of aging in your face?

You may be upset by some of these typical changes that occur with aging:

  • Skin relaxation make the face appear to sag
  • Deeper lines between the nose and corner of the mouth
  • Hollow areas in the cheeks
  • Jowls developing in the jaw
  • Double chin or “turkey neck”

What Causes These Changes?

The changes in the contour of the face can be due to:

  • Thinning of the skin
  • Loss of facial fat
  • Gravity
  • Smoking
  • Heredity

What Is the Difference Between the Various Types of Facelifts?

Mid-Face Lifts

Facelift

A Mid-Face Lift is sometimes called a cheek lift. This is because the main purpose is to elevate the fat pad in the cheek and make the eyes and cheeks look fuller.

Dr. McCann has developed techniques that use invisible incisions inside the eyelids. This allows him to elevate sagging cheeks, giving a more youthful appearance.

Mid-face lifting surgery is often done in conjunction with cosmetic eyelid surgery.

Why Do Patients Get Mid-Face Lift Surgery?

The primary reason is to look younger and to have a happier expression on the face. Elevating the cheeks can reduce dark circles and the nasolabial fold. It can also create a more cheerful expression on the face.

How Long Is Recovery for Mid-Face Lift Surgery?

Mid-face lift surgery is often performed at the same time as eyelid surgery. Eyelid surgery results in bruising and swelling that will resolve in around 3 weeks.

Mini-Facelift Surgery

Mini-facelift surgery is a less invasive procedure. It uses a small incision near the ear.

This procedure helps with wrinkles and sagging skin in the lower part of the face. Unfortunately, it cannot address sagging necks or remove excess skin.

Why Do Patients Get Mini-Face Lift Surgery?

As we age, jowl formation changes the jawline from round to square. It leads to looser tissue that hangs below the bony jawline. A mini-face lift surgery can elevate the jowls and return the lower face to a youthful round contour.

If I Get Mini-Face Lift Surgery Is General Anesthesia Necessary?

No. We often perform the procedure in the office with oral sedation and local anesthesia.

Patients are usually less anxious in the office than in the operating room. It also reduces the cost of the procedure for patients.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From A Mini-Face Lift?

It takes 2-3 weeks for bruising and swelling to resolve. After two weeks, your stitches will be removed.

Does Mini-Face Lift Surgery Affect Your Hairline?

The surgery technique we use has little effect on the sideburns and hairline.

Face Lift Surgery

A full face lift involves several steps. These include removing excess facial fat, tightening facial muscles, and trimming facial skin. This leads to the face looking firmer and more youthful.

Some patients have an excess of fat and or skin in the neck that obscures the normal contour of the neck. For these cases, we can treat the neck and face at the same time.

When Are the Stitches Removed After Face Lift Surgery?

About two weeks after the procedure.

Neck Lift Surgery

Neck lift surgery is generally performed to deal with issues in the jaw and neck. A neck lift helps improve the appearance of a double chin or excess skin under the jaw. Patients may choose to have a neck lift instead of full facial surgery.

A neck lift differs from a mini-face lift as the incision extends much further behind the ear. With a neck lift, there is more surgery necessary when compared to a mini-face lift.

Neck lifts are usually performed in a surgery center or at a hospital. You’re also under general anesthesia. On average, the neck lift also takes longer to recover from than a mini-face lift.

Alternative Treatments to Surgery

Is It Possible to Get A Face Lift Without Having Surgery?

In some patients, the primary problem is loss of volume from the face.  There may not be much sagging or drooping soft tissue.

In these cases, adding volume to the face with fillers can improve the mid face. To a lesser degree, it can also make the lower face look younger as well. We now have fillers available that give results for a year and longer. There are cosmetic treatments like BOTOX, fillers, chemical peels, and ultherapy to consider. They can be complementary to surgery or used in the early stages of aging.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Causes Some People to Have A Bad Result from A Face Lift?

What Causes Some People to Have A Bad Result from A Face Lift?

In our opinion, most poor face lift results are because too much skin is being removed. Removal of too much skin results in an unnatural, pulled back, wind-swept appearance. The surgeon can usually avoid removing too much skin if volume is being added while the skin is removed.
Who Benefits from a Neck Lift vs. A Mini-Face Lift?

Who Benefits from a Neck Lift vs. A Mini-Face Lift?

If the patient’s primary concern is jowl formation, the mini-face lift is our procedure of choice. Some patients have excess skin in the neck as well as jowls. If the neck is thin and the amount of skin in the neck is mild to moderate, we recommend the mini-face lift. For patients with a thick heavy neck with much redundant skin in the neck, a neck lift is the better choice.
